In his opening speech, Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong underscored the Vietnamese people’s patriotism and resolute determination to fight foreign invaders and defend national independence and sovereignty.

Mr. Trong said a conference held in Kowloon, China, on February 3, 1930, to merge communist organizations in Vietnam into a single Party called the Communist Party of Vietnam, was a special milestone.

“It was an historic turning point in the Vietnamese revolution that combined Marxism-Leninism, the workers’ movement, and patriotic movements, proving that the Vietnamese working class was mature enough to lead the revolution,” he noted.

During its development, the Party led the struggle for national liberation, carried out revolutionary movements, and defeated all subversive schemes and invasion plans to win a glorious victory. Highlights are the August Revolution of 1945 which led to the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the historic Dien Bien Phu victory of 1954, and national reunification in 1975.

During national construction, the Party renewed its theoretical thinking on socialism to meet new development requirements, marking an important step in Vietnam’s transition to socialism.

After 35 years of renewal, from a poor country with an outdated technical, social, and economic infrastructure, Vietnam has become a developing country. Its politics and society are stable while independence and sovereignty have been maintained. Vietnam’s position and prestige have risen in the international arena.

Party leader and President Nguyen Phu Trong said: “The Party’s sound and wise leadership over the past 90 years has been a decisive factor in every victory of the Vietnamese revolution. This reality affirms that no political forces other than the Communist Party of Vietnam has sufficient courage, wisdom, experience, prestige, and capacity to lead the nation to overcome all difficulties and challenges and lead the revolutionary cause from one victory to another.”

According to Mr. Trong, the Party, people, and army are jointly realizing the Party platform and the State Constitution and comprehensively promoting national renewal, industrialization, and modernization to develop a socialist-oriented market economy, integrate internationally, and build and defend the nation.

In successfully carrying out this mission, the Party has a key role, said Mr. Trong, who also underlined the need to fine-tune the Party.

“We need to continue to strengthen the Party’s revolutionary nature and vanguard, build a truly transparent and strong Party in terms of politics, ideology, morality, apparatus, and personnel, renew methods of leadership, and strengthen the relationship between the Party and the people so that the Party will be strong enough to develop the nation," said Mr, Trong.

"A true revolutionary party should have a proper direction, be well organized, be comprised of exemplary and devoted members who have a strong attachment to the people and are greatly supported by the people. When that is the case, no hostile forces can hinder the Party’s leadership,” he emphasized.

Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong said he believes the Communist Party of Vietnam, together with the army and the people, will successfully fulfill its responsibility to make Vietnam a peaceful, united, independent, democratic, prosperous, and strong nation.
