Grandmaster Le Quang Liem |
(VOV) – Grandmaster Le Quang Liem yesterday defeated a much stronger opponent, World No.4 Alexander Grischuk to become the first Vietnamese grandmaster to reach the Chess World Cup 4th round. In their first match, Liem shocked his rival by attacking instead of defending to earn a draw, despite playing the black pieces. His subtle tactics earned him a victory after 68 moves. In the second match the Vietnamese player chose a safer approach to hold Grischuk to a draw after 102 moves. Liem is scheduled to face Russian defending champion Peter Svidler in the next round.
