The State Department announced Saturday that it would offer limited charter flights for American citizens from Port-au-Prince to the less chaotic northern city of Cap-Haitien.

On Sunday, gangs in Haiti continued to loot UN aid supplies at the main port in Port-au-Prince and had attacked the main airport in the city causing it to close.

The United Nations said at least 13,000 Haitian civilians have had to flee their homes. The operations and services of the Haitian state are on the brink of collapse and the Caribbean nation is facing the risk of a serious humanitarian crisis.

Even a number of UN agencies in Haiti have become targets of violence, said Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary General, adding that the organization is reconfiguring its presence in the country, while remaining fully committed to delivering life-saving assistance to the people of Haiti.

“The United Nations has authorized the temporary relocation of some internationally recruited personnel from Haiti, while others, who are crisis specialists and humanitarian personnel, will be coming in to help with the operations on the ground,” said Dujarric.

Countries in the region are strengthening security due to fears of a wave of refugees from Haiti. Neighboring Dominican Republic has increased border control and sent special forces to evacuate citizens. In the US, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has dispatched more than 250 troops to the southern region of the state and other key areas to prevent the arrival of refugees fleeing Haiti.
