The Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the authorities doubted that claim. Grace Kaindi, Kenya Police’s Deputy Inspector General, told reporters that preliminary investigations suggested another separatist group called Mombasa Republican Council. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta rejected Al-Shabaab’s claim and condemned local politicians for backing the rebels.
