(VOVWORLD) - An 8 kilometer section of Hanoi Highway road in Ho Chi Minh City is now renamed Vo Nguyen Giap road.

The municipal People’s Council approved the renaming during its 10th session on Wednesday, recognizing the great contributions by General Vo Nguyen Giap to national liberation and reunification.
After its renaming, the Hanoi Highway – Vo Nguyen Giap – Dien Bien Phu route will be formed, creating a connection between historical events and figures.
Vo Nguyen Giap, whose birth name was Vo Giap, was the first general and commander-in-chief of the Vietnamese Army. He passed away on October 4, 2013 in Hanoi.
He made important contributions to the August Revolution in 1945, the resistance war against the French and the Ho Chi Minh offensive to unify the country. He was considered an international military genius of the 20th century for his strategic, political, and diplomatic talents.
