Meteorologists detected precipitation exceeding 50 millimeters per hour, with an expectation of it to continue. The warning also stressed the imminent threat of flash floods and extensive flooding in watercourses.
The deluge early this week set a remarkable record as the heaviest rainfall in 140 years of record keeping. The implications of such an event on the city’s infrastructure, environment, and overall well-being are profound.
The Hong Kong government is racing to repair damage from the flood, in which the risk of landslides remains very high in some areas.
Last week, Hong Kong (China) witnessed a scene of chaos and destruction. Waist-deep water surged through narrow streets, while inundating malls, metro stations, and tunnels. The catastrophe resulted in a tragic loss of two lives and left more than 144 individuals injured. Other than school closings, Hong Kong (China) is operating as normal under a red rainstorm warning. Under the highest alert — a black rainstorm warning — workers are required to avoid travel and the stock market closes temporarily.
