Houthis threaten to expand attacks to Indian Ocean

(VOVWORLD) - The Houthi militias in Yemen have warned they may expand their naval assaults to include ships in the Indian Ocean as well as in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

In a speech televised Thursday night, Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said the Houthis will stop shipping in the Indian Ocean near southern Africa until the Gaza blockade is lifted and the Israeli conflict ends.

Britain’s defence ministry has said the Royal Navy shot down a missile targeting a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden. The warship HMS Diamond shot down the missile on Wednesday using a Sea Viper missile system, the ministry said.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK is at the forefront of the global response to the dangerous attacks on commercial ships by the Houthis. He said those attacks have already claimed the lives of international mariners.
