The decision was announced at a session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris on Thursday. UNESCO said the Hung Kings ritual reflects Vietnamese people’s respect for their ancestors, which boosts national pride and connects the community. Pham Cao Phong, Secretary General of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, said ‘This world recognition endorses the ancestors’ worshiping practices of ethnic groups in Vietnam. This symbolic worship reflects community solidarity.’
Hoang Dan Mac, Chairman of the Phu Tho provincial People’s Committee said the decision is of great significance to the Vietnamese people. The ritual, which has existed for thousands of years, shows the enduring vitality of Vietnamese culture.
