IAEA confirms Iran complying with nuclear deal
(VOVWORLD) - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general Yukiya Amano on Monday confirmed Iran’s compliance with the historic 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The deal was signed by Iran and the P5+1 group, which includes the UK, France, China, the US, Russia, and Germany.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating the “spirit” of the agreement. An IAEA report released last month also confirmed Iran’s compliance with the deal, which froze some of Iran’s nuclear activities. The EU’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said Iran’s compliance with the accord has been verified on at least 8 separate occasions. Under the JCPOA, Iran stopped its nuclear program in exchange for Western countries lifting their sanctions.
In January, 1 year after the JCPOA took effect, President Trump called the accord “the worst deal ever”, finding reasons for unilaterally withdrawing or cancelling the deal. Every 90 days, the US Congress asks the President to certify the deal. Under US law, if he does not, Congress has 60 days to decide whether to re-impose sanctions waived under the deal.
