The event was co-organized by the Vietnam Society of Learning Promotion, the Ministry of Education and Training, and UNESCO in Vietnam. Dr. Pham Tat Dong, General Secretary of the Vietnam Society of Learning Promotion, said that in Vietnam approximately 23,000 people are participating in illiteracy elimination classes. Vietnam aims to build a life-long learning society for improved production capacity and sustainable economic development. Dong said workers should be equipped with the necessary reading skills to continue their vocational learning for a life time: “Illiteracy elimination requires life-long learning. Ministries and sectors need to agree on basic measures to promote life-long learning. Laborers, especially farmers, need to be provided with vocational training to boost the literacy rate”.
In the past few years, Vietnam has made considerable progress in illiteracy elimination, especially among young people from 15 to 25 years of age.
