In Havana, Cuban President Raul Castro congratulated Chavez on his historic victory and confirmed Cuba’s unswerving unity and support for Venezuela under the leadership of President Chavez.
At a press briefing in Beijing, Honglei, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said China congratulated President Chavez’ reelection. China hopes Venezuela will harvest more achievements in national development under the leadership of President Chavez and pledges to raise bilateral relations to a new level.
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy congratulated President Chavez’ victory.
On Monday, opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles applauded Chavez’s victory. Chairman of the National Electoral Council Tibisay Lucena confirmed that President Chavez was re-elected with 54% of the vote, while Capriles gained 45% of the vote. The Council reported that 81% of registered voters cast ballots, which was Venezuela’s highest turnout ever. Voting took place under the supervision of domestic and international observers, including an envoy from the Union of South American Nations.
