Prime Minister Dung said if there are no appropriate solutions, sea water rise estimated at 1m in the end of the century will flood 40% of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region and affect the lives of 55% of the local population. The Mekong Delta’s rice bowl supplies one fifth of the global rice consumption.

Mr. Dung said: “We should enhance cooperation among countries and relevant partners, especially the Mekong River Commission, to sustainably use water resources in the Mekong Delta. Vietnam and regional countries will better use assistance from countries and international organizations for the Mekong Delta and climate change adaption. The Vietnamese government always values and manages the effective use of international funding.”

WB Vice President Laura Tusk said Vietnam has showed the world its strong commitments and determinations to effectively response to climate change. Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte pledged all possible support to Vietnam in the field. Vietnam, the Netherlands, and the WB issued a joint statement calling for global support to Vietnam in coping with climate change in the Mekong Delta.
