(VOVworld) – Iraq’s Defense Ministry said on Monday that its military forces attacked and destroyed two camps of an insurgent group which has relations with the terrorist network of Al-Qaeda in Anbar bordering Syria.
The attack took place after 5 Iraqi senior officials and 10 soldiers were killed in an operation against insurgents in the western province to a Sunni Muslim majority. Local authorities and a commander of the Iraqi military said security has been tightened at border areas by increasing the number of soldiers and equipping them with more new and high-tech weapons.
The plan aims to enhance the fighting capacity of soldiers in Anbar to prevent Al-Qaeda’s efforts to widen its influence and control the areas bordering Syria. Al-Qaeda – related terrorist groups are trying to turn the region into their bases to conduct terrorism activities against both Iraq and Syria.
