Israel to put peace deal with Palestine to referendum

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that if Israel gets to a peace agreement with Palestine, he would like to bring any deal to a referendum. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks have been frozen for 4 years but the referendum issue has re-emerged this week. Some say the deal should be reached by Israeli MPs but others argue that it should be reached by the people through a poll.

Israel passed a bill in 2010 to hold a referendum on exchanging land for peace. It required the approval by parliament or a majority of voters in a referendum if the Golan Heights or east Jerusalem was to be ceded in any deal. The law was widely seen as an attempt to add an additional obstacle to the peace process in the Middle East.
