(VOVworld) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday said Japan will provide aid worth more than 7.7 billion USD to Myanmar over the next five years to support peace-building and development efforts.

At a joint press conference with Myanmar’s State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Prime Minister Abe said he hopes the aid package will boost the economic development of Myanmar. The aid will be directed towards supporting ethnic minorities in Myanmar, as well as airports, electricity, and other projects.
In an earlier meeting in Tokyo with Suu Kyi, Abe pledged Japan’s support across the private and public sectors in support of Myanmar's new democratically elected government.
Suu Kyi said she appreciates Japan's assistance to support peace and stability in Myanmar, and considers Japan a good friend and trusted partner as Myanmar writes a new page in its history.
