Thousands of lanterns were lit up in honor of those who sacrificed their lives for national independence and liberation. The event attracted war veterans, youth union members, and the locals.

During 81 days and nights in the summer of 1972, thousands of soldiers spared secretly crossed the Thach Han River to protect Quang Tri citadel.

Nowadays, Quang Tri citadel is preserved as a war remnant and Thach Han River is considered a graveyard without tombs.

Releasing flowers and lanterns on the Thach Han River is an annual activity, which later became a festival, as a way to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives for the nation.
