The observation was made at a working session on Monday between the National Assembly's Committee on National Defense, Security and Foreign Affairs and the Standing Office of the Ministry of Public Security for UN Peacekeeping Operations. The meeting’s purpose was to appraise the draft Law on Participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Forces.
Participants agreed that participating in UN peacekeeping efforts plays an important role in safeguarding Vietnam’s national security at an early stage and at a distance. At the same time, Vietnamese peacekeepers affirm Vietnam’s position, role, and capacity, particularly that of the People's Public Security Forces, in addressing global issues, resolving conflicts, and maintaining international peace.
The new Law will complete the legal framework for Vietnam’s involvement in UN peacekeeping operations by institutionalizing Party guidelines, the Constitution, state policies and laws, and international treaties to which Vietnam is a signatory.
Lieutenant Colonel To Long, Deputy Chief of the Standing Office of the Ministry of Public Security for UN Peacekeeping Operations, said that in the future, Vietnam will expand the components of its UN peacekeeping force and the scope of its activities in aviation transport and security protection.
“So the Law needs to be more inclusive to ensure long-term stability within the framework of the United Nations, including participating in missions such as European Union training missions or assignments at UN headquarters. We recommend considering a broader title for the law to reflect the scope of Vietnam’s peacekeeping engagement," said Long.
The draft Law will be submitted to the 9th session of the 15th National Assembly this May.
