(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered the formation of a high-level negotiating team, led by the Minister of Industry and Trade, to engage in trade talks with the United States. The team of experts will be tasked with developing strategies based on “harmonized benefits and shared risks,” Mr. Chinh said Thursday.

Chairing the fourth meeting between cabinet members and leaders of ministries, sectors, and localities to address the US’s new tariff policy, PM Chinh said the US has agreed to engage in negotiations toward a reciprocal trade agreement with Vietnam. The goal is to reduce the US’s trade deficit with Vietnam and move toward a more sustainable, long-term balance in trade relations.
“The core perspective is national development within the framework of broader international relations. Resolving this issue must not compromise other relationships. Cooperation with one partner should not come at the expense of others. Our efforts must protect Vietnam’s network of 17 signed Free Trade Agreements and access to over 60 global markets,” Mr. Chinh noted.
PM Chinh said this is an opportunity to restructure the economy, strengthen domestic enterprises, and diversify products, markets, and supply chains. These efforts will position Vietnamese businesses for deeper integration into major global markets and supply networks.
Mr. Chinh instructed ministries, sectors, and localities to consider increasing imports of US goods, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and aircraft, and resolve the concerns of US businesses about the handling of certain non-tariff issues.
