In Japan’s House of Representatives election this week, the LDP won 294 out of 480 seats to become the majority party in the House. The Komei Party, an ally of LDP gained 31 seats. The Democratic Party won only 57 seats, a dismal showing compared to the 308 seats they won three years ago. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the Democratic Party resigned as soon as the election result was released. If a ruling coalition of the LDP and Komei parties is formed, it will hold two thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives enabling it to override Senate votes. The President of LDP, Shinzo Abe, will be elected Japan’s new prime minister at a special session of Japan’s Parliament on December 26.
