Malaysia Airlines plane crashes in eastern Ukraine

(VOVworld) – A Malaysia Airlines flight with 295 people on board crashed Thursday near Donetsk city in western Ukraine near the border with Russia.The aircraft Boeing 777 operating flight MH 17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 280 passengers and 15 crew members died.

According to the latest announcement of Malaysia Airlines’ representative office in Europe, the victims included 154 Dutch, 27 Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11 Indonesians, 6 Americans, 4 Belgians, 3 Filipinos, 1 Canadian and 47 others remain unidentified.

Ukrainian officials believed the flight was shot down. However, the cause of the tragedy has not been verified. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko requested an immediate formation of a national investigation commission over the incident. Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak said he was shocked by the incident and held an urgent press conference to release official announcement to the victim families. The Malaysian government has dispatched a special flight to Kiev carrying a special disaster assistance, and rescue team, and a medical team.

Worldwide state leaders offered condolences to the victims and their families while calling for honest and objective investigations. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a full international investigation into the crash. The UN Security Council planned to discuss the incident on Friday.
