At a meeting with President Vo Van Thuong in Hanoi on Friday, the Malaysian Prime Minister expressed his admiration for Vietnam's previous struggle for national independence and today's success in socio-economic development.
President Thuong emphasized that the PM’s visit helps create a new impetus for the bilateral strategic partnership. He asked the two sides to continue to support each other at regional and global forums, maintain ASEAN’s common position on the East Sea, and ensure the full and serious implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).
The President called for negotiations on an effective and efficient Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The two leaders welcomed the promotion of relations across the Party, State and Government channels; exchange of delegations at all levels; cooperation in economy, trade, investment, education, tourism, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. They emphasized the importance of maintaining ASEAN’s solidarity and centrality and building a strong and resilient ASEAN Community.
