Meeting to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the southwest border defense war victory
(VOVworld)-Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang, Cambodian National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin and Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An and many other leaders joined a meeting in Hanoi on Sunday to mark the 35th anniversary of the southwest border defense war victory. The celebration aims to recognize the victory’s historical landmark and valuable support from Vietnamese people and army in the libration of Cambodia from the Pol Pot genocidal regime. Speaking at the event, President Truong Tan Sang reiterated Vietnam and Cambodia ’s wish for peace and national reconstruction and defense 35 years ago but the Pol Pot practiced a genocidal policy in Cambodia and invaded Vietnam . During more than 3 years in power, the Pol Pot regime killed nearly 3 million Cambodian and brought the Cambodian people to the edge of genocide. The Pol Pot regime distorted history and used forces to invade Vietnam ’s southwest, destructed villages, killed civilians and seriously violated Vietnam ’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. In response to the Cambodian people, Vietnam practiced its self defense right and joined Cambodian people and armed forces with the support of international friends to defeat the Pol Pot genocidal regime on January 7, 1979. President Truong Tan Sang: “This historic victory is a joint victory and joyfulness of the two people’s in their protection of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, closing darkest pages of Cambodian history, saving Cambodian people from genocide disaster and opening up a new era of independence, peace, freedom, neutrality and development for the Cambodian people."
President Sang reiterated the Party, State and people’s forever treasuring of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts’ contribution during the just struggle for national defense and serving international mission in joining Cambodian people in the defeat of Pol Pot regime:“Unity between the two people’s has been engraved in the history and cannot be distorted by any force. Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECC) with the United Nations support have brought to justice leaders of the genocidal regime, representing bright rightness and impartial support by the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodia from 1979 to 1989."

Cambodian National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin hailed the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers’ support to liberate Cambodia from the Pol Pot genocidal regime and the victory day on January 7, 1979 has been the 2nd birthday of the Cambodian people: “The meeting today is an important event of the Party, State and people of Vietnam who had sacrificed for the resuscitation of the Cambodian people. This is an opportunity for us to pay respect and tribute to great support by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and world friends in sharing Cambodian people’s suffering. Without Vietnamese solders’ sacrifice, Cambodian soldiers wouldn’t have opportunity to win on January 7, 1979. Vietnamese People’s Army sacrifice has brought about major victory for Cambodian people.”
