(VOVworld) – The UN General Assembly on Monday unanimously elected Denmark’s former parliament speaker Mogens Lykketoft as President of its 70th session.

Addressing delegates after his election at the UN headquarters in New York, Mr Lykketoft, the unanimous choice of European and other Western nations, said his Presidency will be marked by a “commitment to action” towards building “a more fair and stable world.” He said top priorities of the international community now are to ensure peace, keep climate change at bay, and promote sustainable economic growth. The 70th session of the UN General Assembly will begin this September.
