Most EU defense ministers object to creation of EU army

(VOVWORLD) - At least two-thirds of European defense ministers were against the idea of creating a common European Union (EU) armed force, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said during a Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee meeting.

Minister Rinkevics said the concerns expressed by EU defense ministers were largely due to the uncertainty how such an army would be formed, as well as concerns about how the use of the army would be decided.

Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel endorsed the creation of an EU army, siding with French President Emmanuel Macron who had similarly called to reduce the EU’s dependence on US defense.
