(VOVworld) – Myanmar’s new Upper House on Wednesday elected Mahn Win Khaing Than of the Kayin ethic group as Speaker and Aye Tha Aung of the Arakans as deputy speaker of the chamber.

Mahn Win Khaing Than, in the middle, is the Kayin ethnic MP from the National League for Democracy Party who was elected as the new speaker of the Upper House on Feb.3.

On February 1, the Upper House, dominated by representatives of the National League for Democracy, convened its first meeting in nay Pyi Taw.
On Monday’s Lower House opened. U Win Myint, a NLD MP close to Suu Kyi, was made Lower House Speaker and U Ti Khun Myat, a Union Solidarity and Development (USDP) MP and a Kachin who ran a pro-government militia, became his deputy.
