The Vietnamese female footballers beat the Thais 2-0 on February 2 and had a 2-1 win over the Chinese Taipei on February 6 in play-off matches of the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup, securing a place in the World Cup for the first time.
The men's football team on February 1, the 1st day of the Lunar New Year, elated fans as they won 3-1 over China in Hanoi in the final round of 2022 World Cup qualifiers, making history with their first win against the Chinese team and also the first win of a Southeast Asian national team in the final qualifying round of the World Cup.
