th National Assembly opened its year-end session in Hanoi on Tuesday. Attending the opening ceremony was Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and leaders of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, social organizations, and the diplomatic corps.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said that the session has a large legislative workload. “The National Assembly is expected to examine and adopt 18 bills and several resolutions and give opinions on 8 other draft laws. The National Assembly will focus on fine tuning the legal systems related to the judiciary, protecting human and citizens’ rights, the market economy, security and national defense, social order, and the organization and operation of the National Assembly in line with the Constitution.”
Also up for scrutiny are the Government’s report on the implementation of the socio-economic development plan and State budget tasks in 2015, new socio-economic development plans, budget estimates, and budget allocation plans for 2016, the issuance of the NA’s resolutions on these contents, and socio-economic development plans, the mid-term public investment plan, and the financing plan for 2016-2020.
The NA will set the dates for the elections of the 14th National Assembly and People’s Councils for the 2016-2021 tenure, and elect the Chairman and appoint the Vice Chairmen and members of the National Electoral Council. The NA will also elect its Secretary General and examine documents to be submitted to the 12th National Party Congress.
At the opening session, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung presented the Government report on the socio-economic situation in 2015, developments from 2011 to 2015, and the socio-economic development plan for 2016.
