NATO highlights goals of fairer burden sharing
(VOVWORLD) - NATO Defence Ministers began their 2 day virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss the NATO 2030 initiative, which aims at making the transatlantic Alliance fit for the future. Member states reviewed progress towards fairer burden-sharing, while strengthening defence and deterrence.
Following the first day of the meetings of NATO Military Chiefs, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the online press conference that this is the organization’s first ministerial meeting with the Biden administration, which is an important milestone in the bloc’s preparations for its summit later this year. According to Stoltenberg, NATO has a unique opportunity to open a new chapter in relations between Europe and North America, adding that NATO faces global challenges that no country or continent can tackle alone. He stressed the importance of political coordination among Allies to protect the rules-based international order, whilst also noting that NATO must do more to address the security implications resulting from climate change.
