NATO summit: common voice not insight

(VOVworld) - NATO Summit opens on Sunday in Chicago, US with the participation of representatives from 50 countries, as well as the bloc’s members and guests. The summit is predicted not to be able to find a common voice and military experts said world leaders will tackle Afghanistan’s post-conflict future as NATO decided to withdraw its 130,000 troops from this country by 2014.

Before the summit, many military experts warned that Afghanistan would collapse once NATO withdraws its troops as the current Afghan government can not handle the country’s security. The troop withdrawal decision is attributed to European countries’ efforts to tighten their funds amid economic crisis and Afghanistan’s internal pressures .

Another hot issue on the agenda is the missile shield project, a cause of disagreement between NATO and Russia. Russia insisted that both sides will cooperate to make a decision whether they should intercept a missile. Although the US supports its cooperation with Russia in the missile shield project, it does not consider Russia an equal partner in military and technology.
