The allies agreed on NATO’s most detailed and robust defense plans since the Cold War, strengthened their commitment to defense investment, agreed to bring Ukraine closer to NATO, and strengthened partnerships around the world.

NATO leaders called the summit historic when it came to commitments on Ukraine's prospects of joining the alliance, Finland’s participation as its 31st member, and Turkey's agreement to allow Sweden to join the bloc.

The allies also announced new military support for Ukraine.

According to Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, the Vilnius summit opened new opportunities by strengthening NATO’s relationship with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

The next NATO summit will take place in Washington next year, marking 75 years since the establishment of the alliance.

On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the NATO summit in Lithuania showed that the alliance is returning to "Cold War schemes"  based on an ideology that divides the world into democracies and autocracies.

The Ministry said the results of the summit will be taken into account in identifying challenges and threats to Russia's security and interests and responding in a timely and appropriate manner, using all means and methods at its disposal. Russia, it said, will continue to strengthen its military defense system.
