(VOVWORLD) - Negotiation efforts will secure fair agreements for Vietnam and the US, said Adam Sitkoff, Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Hanoi during a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The conference was held following US President Donald Trump’s announcement a 46% reciprocal tariffs on imported goods from Vietnam, set to take effect on April 9.
Mr. Adam Sitkoff said: "The positive thing is that Vietnam does have a great relationship and a good working relationship with the United States and therefore it is very easy for senior Vietnamese officials to be able to talk and negotiate with people in the Trump Administration. I'm very complimentary the Vietnamese government. I have seen repeatedly that the Vietnamese government is proactive and aggressive at how they'll deal with the American government and I think that's great and I know that that's going to continue today tomorrow and next week because Vietnamese people are good negotiators and that continues as the Vietnamese government is going to try to negotiate something that is fair and reciprocal and helps the people in the business communities of both countries."
In recent weeks, representatives from both the Vietnamese and US governments have met multiple times to discuss new trade measures and policy adjustments. In addition to reducing import tariffs on US goods, the Vietnamese government has approved new agreements allowing American companies to operate in Vietnam.
These include facilitating SpaceX's development of experimental internet protection services for Starlink in Vietnam, agreeing to purchase more US-made aircraft, and approving a 1.5 billion USD investment project by the Trump Group in Hung Yen.
