(VOVWORLD) - According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of SARS-CoV-2 virus infections decreased globally by 16% in the past week, marking a month-long decline in global COVID-19 graph.
According to WHO, 10 million new cases and 60,000 fatalities globally was recorded last week. The Western Pacific was the only region to see an increase in COVID-19 cases.
Mortality rate increased 22% in the Western Pacific and 4% in the Middle East, while decreased in other regions.
WHO considers Omicron to be the most common variant worldwide. Up to 99.5% of current COVID-19 cases are caused by the Omicron variant, while only 0.3% are due to Delta infection.
WHO recommends that it is still too early to say that the COVID-19 pandemic ends, adding that if there is a chance to spread, the SARS-CoV-2 virus will continue to mutate and most likely a new variant will pose a higher risk of infection and death.
