(VOVworld) – The Mekong delta province of Can Tho on Monday hosted a seminar to study a project to evaluate the current cooperative economy and build a new cooperative model for the region. At the seminar, co-organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Southwestern Region Steering Committee, participants agreed on the need to pilot a new type of cooperatives in rice cultivation, fruit growing, and tra fish breeding.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dang Huy Dong said a successful pilot model will be replicated throughout the region. Dong said:"Members of the new-style cooperatives, particularly farmers, will be provided with low-cost input materials and assistance in production technology and sales in the most effective way. The new model will link farmers, develop the economy, and improve lives".
There are currently 13,000 cooperatives in the Mekong Delta region but, Dong said, farmers have not gained much benefit due to lack of cooperation.
