Mr. John Key said the "intense" negotiations could resume again within two to three weeks, although a date or location had not yet been set. He said there was only a small window of opportunity before the United States presidential nominations and elections made it more difficult to continue negotiations. The Prime Minister said that after the negotiations in Hawaii, there were now fewer outstanding issues on the table. If negotiators and ministers can get together soon - hopefully before the end of the month - momentum can be maintained and any backsliding from what was agreed in Hawaii could be prevented.
The latest TPP negotiations in Hawaii concluded last week with no progress made due to the differences between the 12 negotiating countries on cars, dairy production and intellectual property. New Zealand government has taken part in the TPP negotiations for nearly 5 years, considering it important part of its plan to diversify the economy.
