Nuclear weapon ban treaty receives great support
(VOVWORLD) - The recent UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was applauded by many countries from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America while Western powers said it does not address concerns on international security including North Korea’s nuclear program.
Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi said Tehran strongly supports the objectives of the treaty which ban possessing, using or threatening to use nuclear weapons in the world.

Elayne Whyte Gomez, Costa Rica’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva and chairwoman of the conference, said this is the first step towards a nuclear-free world. The International Committee of the Red Cross hailed it as a historic step towards de-legitimizing nuclear weapons and a victory for the shared humanity. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the treaty reflects growing awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of a nuclear war. Disarmament campaigners say the treaty will increase the stigma associated with nuclear weapons and have an impact on public opinion.
