Nung ethnic Sli singing recognized as national intangible cultural heritage
(VOVWORLD) - Sli singing of the Nung ethnic minority in Xuan Duong commune in the northern mountainous province of Bac Kan was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage at a ceremony on Sunday to mark Vietnam Ethnic Group Cultural Day (April 19).

Nong Van Ho of Thom Chan hamlet said they all feel proud of the recognition, adding, “It motivates us to continue to preserve and develop this art form. We have a club to promote the genre. I urge other villagers to teach it to their children to keep it alive.”
Sli is a unique folk song style of the Nung in Vietnam’s northern region. It’s performed as a call and response between boys and girls.
Xuan Duong commune is considered the home of this art form. The local Nung still organize their Xuan Duong love market on the 25th day of the third lunar month, when Sli melodies can often be heard.
Bac Kan now has 17 cultural heritages recognized as a National Intangible Heritage.
