Riyaz Malik, an Indian official in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, said 35 trucks left for Chakothi on the Pakistani side of the border, with a similar number moving in the opposite direction. Trade across the Line of Control (LoC) operates on a barter system, where no money is exchanged.

Hostilities between the two neighbors escalated dramatically late last month after a attack in the Indian-controlled Kashmir on February 14 killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police.

Tensions in the contested region have continued, with both sides carrying out military retaliation. Pakistan at one point closed its airspace, disrupting thousands of flights for 2 consecutive days.

Last Friday Pakistan re-opened its airspace and released a downed Indian pilot. On Saturday Pakistan announced the resumption of railway transportation to and from India.
