The draft seeks a long-term, peaceful, comprehensive, and fair solution to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said the draft was delivered to the UN by Jordan, who represents Arab countries on the UN Security Council. The resolution, written following Palestinian discussion with France, outlines a series of deadlines, including Israel’s withdrawal no later than the end of 2017.
Mansour said the Palestinians are open to further discussions of the draft’s content and will not hold an early election to create better conditions for parties involved in the debate.
France, the UK, and Germany are also drafting a resolution, which French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said would propose concluding peace talks in two years. The US and Israel have declined to set a timeline for Israel-Palestine peace talks.
