Peacekeeping force in Afghanistan not on radar screen of Security Council
(VOVWORLD) - The UN Security Council is not considering a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan although the situation in that country is a matter of grave concern, said T.S. Tirumurti, the Indian UN ambassador, whose country holds the Security Council presidency for the month of August.

The Security Council is monitoring how negotiations in Afghanistan progress and hopes the negotiations and peace talks will yield results, said ambassador Tirumurti, adding that the UNSC hopes a military solution can be avoided.
The United Nations has no peacekeepers in Afghanistan. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan is a political mission. But violence there is increasing. Recently there was an attack on the UN compound in Herat.
