The Peruvian National Police then arrested President Castillo and former PM Anibal Torres.
Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as interim President a few hours after Castillo was deposed, becoming the first female President in the history of Peru.
Castillo had attempted to dissolve Congress, form an emergency government, and hold new legislative elections, in what Peru’s constitutional tribunal described as a ‘coup’.
