PM attends 31st ASEAN Summit
(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend a plenary session following the 31st ASEAN Summit’s opening ceremony on Monday in Manila, the Philippines.
Leaders reviewed the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, discussed measures to improve the effectiveness of their activities, as well as regional and international issues of shared concern. They reiterated their vows to promote complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In his address, PM Phuc underscored the bloc’s 3 key future cooperative areas. He proposed that the group focus more on people’s interests, promote common values, attach greater importance to building the ASEAN Economic Community and develop businesses through fostering economic connectivity and internal trade. He also urged ASEAN to improve its role in the international arena for regional peace and prosperity.
Regarding the East Sea issue, PM Phuc requested all documents discussed at this Summit to fully the reflect principles of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting 50 Joint Communique. The document emphasizes the importance of maintaining and promoting peace, security, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea. He also highlights the need to exercise self-restraint, avoid actions that may complicate the situation, and pursue peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC). ASEAN leaders have agreed to sign 1 document, approve 11 documents and acknowledge 11 others reflecting ASEAN cooperation in various fields.
