(VOVWORLD) -Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as part of his working trip to Brazil and attendance at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

At the talks, Prime Minister Chinh applauded this year's G20 Summit agenda which focuses on discussing poverty eradication, sustainable development and global governance reform, issues of shared concern of developing countries.
President Lula da Silva said he believes that Vietnam, with its proactive foreign policy, vision and development experience of a responsible middle-sized country in international political, economic, and cultural activities, will actively contribute to the success of the Summit.
President Lula da Silva acknowledged PM Chinh’s proposals regarding Brazil's recognition of Vietnam's market economy status, as well as the early initiation of negotiations for a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) next year so as to bring practical benefits to both sides and contribute to each country's development.
The two sides agreed on coordination to effectively implement the signed cooperation documents, including education cooperation agreement, action plan to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation and action plan deploy cooperation between the two diplomatic academies for the period 2024-2025.
They stressed the need to soon organize the 3rd session of the Vietnam-Brazil Joint Committee on Economic and Trade Cooperation, the 1st session of the Joint Committee on Science and Technology and the 9th session of the political consultation mechanism between the two Foreign Ministries.
Both sides pledged to work together in training young football talents and expand cooperation in new fields suitable to the needs of both sides.
The two leaders stressed the importance of defense and security cooperation and agreed to strengthen cooperation in officer training, defense industry and trade, logistics, military medicine, and peacekeeping. Based on the Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation signed in September 2023, Vietnam and Brazil will boost cooperation in transnational crime prevention and cyber security.
