(VOVworld)- President Tran Dai Quang held talks with US President Barack Obama on Monday after a warm welcoming ceremony. After the talks, the two Presidents held a joint press conference. President Tran Dai Quang said the two sides discussed the implementation of the Joint Statement on Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership signed in July 2013 and the Joint Vision Statement on Vietnam-US in July, 2015.

During President Obama’s official visit, the two countries released a Joint Statement on strengthening the Comprehensive Partnership in a more practical, effective and deeper manner. The two sides agreed to address the war aftermaths and further cooperation in this regard. President Tran Dai Quang said the two sides agreed to enhance cooperation at regional and international forums. The US will support Vietnam in organizing the APEC Summit 2017 and UN peacekeeping activities. The two sides discussed recent developments in the East Sea, and pledged to work together to cope with climate change and sustainably use water resources in the Mekong River.

President Tran Dai Quang said: “The two sides shared views on bilateral and multilateral issues. They shared their common concerns on maintaining peace and promoting development cooperation in the region. The achievements that the two sides have gained stemmed from sharing their common concerns and interests and seriously abiding by commitments, respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, political institution and interests. President Barack Obama’s visit will create new momentum for the development of Vietnam-US ties in the near future and will contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia Pacific region and the world”.

President Obama said the US aims to plays a greater and longer role in the Asia Pacific region and prioritizes its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam. During his visit, the two sides agreed on a number of solutions to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, especially in the Trans Pacific Partnership to help Vietnam better integrate globally and bring benefits for both countries. President Obama said the US lifted the lethal weapons embargo on Vietnam: "The US is fully lifting the ban on the sale of military equipment to Vietnam that has been in place for some 50 years. As with all defense partners, sales will need to still meet strict requirements including those related to human rights. But this change will ensure that Vietnam has access to the equipment it needs to defend itself and removes a lingering vestige of the Cold War. It also underscored the commitment of the United States to fully normalize the relationship with Vietnam including strong defense ties with Vietnam and this region for the long term. More broadly, the United States and Vietnam are united in our support for a regional order including in the East Sea or international norms and rules are upheld where this is freedom of navigation and overflight where lawful commerce is not impeded and disputes are resolved peacefully, through legal means in accordance with international law. I want to repeat that the US will continue to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows, and we will support the right of all countries to do the same".
President Obama said there remained a number of differences concerning human right issues between the two sides but real progress has been reported.
After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a number of economic cooperation deals including a contract to purchase 100 B737 MAX 200 air craft worth 11.3 billion USD between Vietjet Air and the Boeing Air Craft Group. Vietjet Air also signed another contract worth 3.04 billion USD with Pratt &Whitney of United Technologies Corp.
