(VOVworld) – The Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held a press conference on May 16 at its headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia to publicize the outcomes of the 24
th ASEAN summit in Myanmar on May 10-11.
ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh said the summit obtained positive results including the approval of a joint statement on realizing the ASEAN community in 2015 and boosting cooperation in Southeast Asia based on the spirit of equality and partnership to contribute to regional peace, security, stability, development, and prosperity.
For the first time in 20 years, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting issued a Statement on the East Sea. It confirmed that peace, stability, security, and freedom of navigation in the East Sea is a common issue of ASEAN. The statement said ASEAN wanted all sides to abide by international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, and ASEAN 6-point Declaration on the East Sea.
