(VOVworld) – Diplomats and officials from 17 countries directly or indirectly affected by the migrant crisis gathered in Bangkok on Friday to discuss how to deal with the thousands of Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants trying to reach Malaysia and Indonesia by boat. Representatives of the US and UN are also attending the meeting. Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn opened the morning session with a call to action, saying the influx of boat migrants had reached an "alarming level". He said the crisis could only be solved through an international efforts, adding that the root causes that were encouraging the migrants to leave "must be addressed”. In addition to helping the needy, it was necessary to stop the refugee flow, fight transnational crime, and crack down on human smuggling, said Tanasak.
Thousands of people have fled Bangladesh and Myanmar by boat, heading south to Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The UN estimates about 3000 migrants have either drifted to shore or were saved by local fishermen. Most of the migrants are Bangladeshi or from Myanmar’s Rohingya ethnic minority.
