(VOVworld) – The EU’s common armed forces, if they are ever created, may play a provocative role, Frants Klintsevich, first deputy chairman of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, said on Sunday.He stated that a common army would not enable the EU to conduct a common foreign and security policy or help to clarify Europe’s place and responsibility in the world. He said that extra armies do not provide any additional security in the nuclear age but they could certainly play a provocative role, adding that it was regrettable that such ideas had already been discussed by German officials.

The European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, had earlier called for the establishment of an EU army amid security concerns related to the Ukrainian crisis. He said such an international force could react credibly to any external threat and defend European values.
