(VOVworld) – Russia on Friday expressed its disappointment with the US assessment on an international agreement to ease the crisis in Ukraine saying that Washington’s threat of imposing new sanctions on Moscow is unacceptable.
According to a spokesperson for the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, the US stated that the deal reached by Russia, the US, the EU, and Ukraine in Geneva was promising, but Washington and its allies will impose additional sanctions on Russia unless the situation in Ukraine improves. The US’ move is said not to help parties involved to continue dialogues.
In Ukraine, interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called for a discussion on changes to Constitution concerning decentralizing of power by October 1. Under the plan, more power will be given to a number of regions while the status of the Russian language will be promoted considering it an official language in areas with majority of Russian speakers. But armed demonstrators have announced not to leave the public offices that are being blockaded in Ukraine’s southeastern city of Donetsk. Several protest leaders asked to conduct a referendum like the one in Crimea, rejected the Geneva deal, and demanded the Kiev caretaker government to leave government buildings. Meanwhile strikers in Ukrainian southern provinces declared not to be bound to the agreement brokered by the US, Russia, and the EU in Geneva on Wednesday.
