The deal will enable cooperation in fundamental and applied nuclear research, including nuclear medicine, nuclear waste disposal, nuclear and radiation safety, the production of isotopes, and the training of nuclear sector specialists. But under the deal, the two countries will not exchange nuclear information that constitutes state secret or transfer technologies and equipment for chemical processing of spent nuclear fuel, isotope enrichment of uranium, or the production of heavy water and highly-enriched uranium.
In 2016, Russia and Cuba signed an intergovernmental agreement on economics, trade, science, and technology and a cooperative agreement on bio-medicine.
