This is part of Russia’s effort to seek a political solution to Syria’s crisis. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin said it would be a mistake if the UN did not appoint a new special envoy soon.
Brahimi resigned on May 31st after two years trying to mediate efforts to end the 3-year civil war in Syria. UN Chief Ban Ki-moon said Brahimi’s efforts were not supported by all UN Security Council members and other involved countries.
