The same day, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had resumed "offensive actions" in Ukraine after announcing a ceasefire to allow residents of two besieged cities of Mariupol and neighbouring Volnovakha to evacuate.
Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that due to the unwillingness of the Ukrainian side to influence the nationalists or to extend the ceasefire, offensive operations had resumed at 6 p.m. Moscow time.
According to Konashennkov, nationalist battalions took advantage of the ceasefire to regroup and reinforce their positions.
